Flashlight Friday
in celebration of completing unit 5 in reading, ILEARN, and IREAD, our class took our favorite books and blankets outside to read. It was a beautiful day to sit in the sun and read with our friends!

Bio Inspired Flowers
In science we have been studying the parts of a plant and how each part helps the plant to grow. After learning, we tried to extend that learning by creating our own bio-inspired flowers. We needed to test some building materials to determine which ones would be the best to use in our designs. We looked a cotton, wool, acrylic yarn, jute, coffee filters, tissue paper, and napkins. These tests helped us rethink our designs before building them.

Triton Gives Back
50's Day
Fun February wraps up today with 50's day! Students enjoyed dressing up and listening to 50's music. Lunch time brought us burgers, fries, and root beer floats. Sixth grade really stepped up with kindness, and gave everyone a free float! In true keeping with 50's day, who would have guess that we had an internet outage, so nobody was using technology! YEAH for the good ole' 50's!

Learning about Rocks and Minerals
In science we have been learning about rocks and minerals. Students have learned we can determine what mineral we have by looking at how it cleaves; or shape it grows/breaks into, their luster; or shine, if there is a color streak, and hardness. We looked at some real examples, viewed them virtually, and discovered what every day items are made up of these minerals. Everyone enjoyed making their own crystals. The wait overnight was hard, but it was exciting to pull our creations out of their watery solution and see what had grown. Everyone was able to test their crystal for cleavage, luster, streak, and hardness!

GERMS!
YUCK! Third graders took some time to learn about how germs and bacteria spread and grow. We were also able to see what some images of what common viral and bacterial illnesses look like when viewed under a microscope. It is amazing how pretty and colorful those nasty things can be. We learned what are the best ways to do our part, and keep from getting sick. Handwashing is the easiest way to begin! Students' hands were sprinkled with glitter to represent the germs. Afterwards, they tried different methods of washing their hands to see what removed them the best.

Heat and Light Energy
Learning about heat and light energy in science has taught us a lot. Our class was able to take time to put what we learned to the test by building habitats for penguins. Everyone had ideas, sketches, and designs. As you would guess, some ice penguins lost weight quickly until they were a puddle of water, but others stayed around for a long time! Great designs guys!

Bah Humbug!
Just what is a humbug anyway? What do they look like? Where do they live? What do they do? Here is what we think!

Gobbler, Wobblers
Our short school week before Thanksgiving allowed us many opportunities to have fun while we learned. In science we learned about Turkeys and then made our own colorful Gobbler Wobblers!

Native American Studies
Our class has been learning about various Native American Cultures. These Indian groups are from various areas throughout North America. Even though each group has special types of homes, customs, food, and ways of life, they all help a deep respect for nature. To honor the Creator for the beauty he gave them, they made their everyday items beautiful as well. Take a look at our class creating their own artful replicas!
The Native American Art Display Now on Exhibit
View our virtual art museum exhibit. Our class has some amazing artists that have designed their own recreations from the past! Amazing Art!!!!

Learning about the Engineering Design Process
Science can be a ton of fun! We started learning about the scientific method and building paper airplanes. We are not studying the engineering design process by building lifeguard chairs. We will be comparing the two methods and learning about sketching. We have some great builders in action!

Our New Class:
We are off to a great year! Things may be a little unusual as far a procedures, masks, and such, but one thing never changes, we have a great group of third graders. I am so excited to get our classroom full of eager to learn students! Even though today was mostly about rules, procedures, and how to log in to Google Classroom, it was a great FIRST DAY!!!! Let's make this a fabulous year!
